Gap between Scottish and English suicide rates widens

Feb 9, 2012
A new study has revealed the widening gap in suicide rates between Scotland and England & Wales due, to a large extent, to the number of young Scottish men taking their lives.

Welcome to the website of the MRC Social and Public Health Sciences Unit.

Our aim is to promote human health via the study of social and environmental influences on health.

Our more specific objectives include:

  • studying how people's social positions, and their social and physical environments, influence their physical and mental health and capacity to lead healthy lives,
  • designing and evaluating interventions aiming to improve public health and reduce social inequalities in health, and
  • influencing policy and practice by communicating the results and implications of research to a wide range of audiences.

The Unit receives core funding from the UK Medical Research Council and the Chief Scientist Office at the Scottish Government Health Directorates. The Unit is located on the main campus of the University of Glasgow, Scotland, and is an affiliated member of the University's Division of Community Based Sciences.

The Unit’s research is divided into eight programmes. There is considerable overlap and joint working between these programmes, and many projects (and especially studentship projects), may straddle across two or more programmes.
